Urgent message for band parents

ARE YOUR KIDS IN DANGER? While they aren't technically classified that way, our band students are definitely athletes in training, and they face many of the same demands.

Band camp was thankfully not as hot as previous years, but make no mistake, it is still the hottest part of summer. We absolutely cannot have students coming to after-school practice without eating healthy food and drinking lots of water - all day, not just at 4 o'clock.

If they aren't eating anything but junk all day and/or drinking little or no water, they will be more likely to throw up or pass out at practice, which can result in embarrassment, discomfort or even injury! Please make sure your student is not in danger! All the same rules from band camp still apply:

  • Eat healthy - you can't do band on an empty or poorly fed stomach.

  • Eat good protein. Avoid foods that are heavy in sugar.

  • Drink lots of water.

  • Wear tennis shoes and socks.

  • Wear lightweight clothing appropriate to the weather (like, no jeans when over 80 degrees!). Please bring a change from your school clothes - leave it in the band room in the morning if you need to.

WATER - ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED! One change we made this year to address the water issue is to require everyone to purchase a band-issued personal water cooler (at least 1/2 gallon size).

  • Students are responsible for their water cooler and are expected to bring it to all practices, games and competitions. Please make sure your student always brings their water cooler!

  • Our large 5 gallon water coolers are taken to the field, but those are intended for back-up to your personal water, not a replacement.

  • Please help your student keep their water cooler clean and mold-free. That means taking it home regularly for a thorough cleaning.

  • Students have access to lockers in the band room where they can store their cooler and a change of clothes if they can't carry it or store it.

Thank you for your immediate attention to this matter, and we look forward to a better practice on Thursday.
